Every year, Toronto fashion designers showcase their collections on the runway for the longest-running fashion week in Canada, Fashion Art Toronto (FAT). But the looks can’t be complete without makeup! Each show, the designers bring new makeup trends to life and creatively reflect the theme of their collections through these makeup looks. This fall, FAT’s key makeup artist, Jez Taylor has done a phenomenal job creating some beautiful makeup looks with his key makeup artists, Paola Ortiz, Toni-Rose Williams, and Anoush Baravyan-Gauthier. Here are some of our favourite looks from the 2023 fall fashion week at Fashion Art Toronto.
MACEL studio stunned us with their makeup theme this season. They beautifully reflected their collection by giving the models an outta this world makeup vibe. The shading and blending of vibrant colours created an exaggerated facial structure that can be entirely manipulated to the artist’s liking. For this look, the artist used a blend of neon pink and electric green eyeshadow to contour the face. In addition, dark purple eyeshadow was used to create an exaggerated shadow effect on the cheekbones.
A classic with a twist. Kyana Kingbird gave all her models a unified smokey eye and lips to impress. This look was one of the most innovative we have seen this year as the artist modernized the smokey eye look and extended it to the lips. The smokey lips effect was created using a dark lip liner and gloss. It gives a clean bold impression that greatly compliments the garments.
The creativity with Vveyago’s makeup looks was on another level. Going for no eyebrows allowed makeup artists to achieve a variety of emotions with each look as they created their own eyebrow-like effect using eyeshadow. In this look, the artist created a sharp arched eyebrow effect conveying anger. The great choice of nude brown lips helped keep the focus on the eyes and emphasize the emotions achieved through the brows. This beautifully conveyed the theme and helped us connect with each design.
At the TMU fashion show for FAT this year, Delfina Russo created a beautiful makeup look that focused on the eyes. The artist’s choice of white graphic eyeliner was simple and effective. The white eyeliner fit so perfectly that it seemed like an extension of the garment. The attention to detail can really be seen through this makeup look choice. The makeup also acts as a reflection of Delfina Russo’s delicate design style.
The spirals created for some of Tristan Rehel’s looks were so well done. The symmetry of the spirals show a high level of professionalism brought by the team. The makeup created an illusion that zoned out the model’s face and brought more attention to the garment’s details. The neon green colour choice of the makeup also played a huge role in emphasizing the details through a sharp contrast with the black colour of the garment.
