In 2023, we learned that we need to make time for ourselves and take frequent breaks in order to avoid burnout and remain productive. In 2024, we’re going to apply these lessons and plan out ways to prioritize our mental and physical health. These are some of my essential self-care goals for the new year.

    1. Move your body

Not only does moving your body help to maintain your physical health and mobility, but studies have shown that it also has a huge impact on your brain health and your mood, according to the CDC. Moving your body throughout the day in any form you like will instantly make your day feel better. If you like a specific sport or enjoy going to the gym, stretching or doing some yoga, or even going on a walk with your friends, simply moving your body a little every day will greatly benefit you.

    2. Get sufficient sleep

As important as it is for you to move your body and remain active, it is equally important to get sufficient sleep during the night and rest when it’s time for it and when your body tells you to. A good night’s sleep helps improve your physical health as it reduces the risk of diseases and disorders as well as greatly impacts your mood according to the National Institute of Health. Having some rest is also very important in gaining more energy for the next day to be able to perform well.

    3. Eat balanced meals

In order to maintain a healthy body, brain, and a high level of energy, you must eat balanced meals throughout your day. Your meals should consist of carbohydrates like grains, fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats. Eating balanced meals allows your body to get the nutrients it needs to be healthy and have enough energy to perform during your day. In addition to balanced meals, it is important to keep hydrated and drink plenty of water.

    4. Make time for your hobbies

Life is more than just work. It is important to take care of yourself and take time to do the things you love. Make time in your schedule to do something you enjoy now and then. Whether you like to paint, read, watch a movie, or spend time with family and friends, make sure to take that break from work and enjoy life a little. In the end, this is how we get the motivation and passion to work, and leave a truly meaningful impact on the people around us.

    5. Practice gratitude

One of the most important habits to incorporate into your life is to practice gratitude. Life is not always fun or easy; it’s full of ups and downs. This is something you always need to remember. When times get rough, it is important to remember the good things in your life that keep you moving forward. It’s important to remember that one friend who told you they believe in you, the one person you can help if you achieve your goals, and all the good things that happened to you. Always appreciate what you have, even during hardships and times of grief.

By taking on these habits, you gain a healthier and more positive perspective on life. As you care for your brain’s health, you become more capable of thinking clearly and better at problem-solving and decision-making. These habits also allow you to have more energy which helps you complete your daily tasks, achieve your goals, and work towards a better future.
