Looking back even 10 years ago, the confines of a brick and mortar mall were consistently bustling. Spralling expanses of land were used to create these meccas of retail innovation. They were a necessity in any city or town in North America acting as a landmark or community hub, each different, each showing off a city’s design and architecture prowess. They were an indication of a city’s financial health, whose residents had disposable income and a willingness to spend their earnings. Now however, with the increase in online shopping and the consumers desire to save amongst economic uncertainty we bid farewell to the mall as we know it. Throughout North America we have seen the closure of malls that were once prosperous succumb to the changing tide of the retail environment. ‘Survival of The Fittest’ highlights the sad reality of the mall, one that is empty, rundown and waiting for redevelopment.
