Last night the Much Music HQ took over Toronto’s downtown core with their annual IHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards, a celebration of both Canadian and international music. Celebs of all sorts strutted their stuff on the pink carpet, dressing in fashions ranging from chic tailored suiting (we’re looking at you Post Malone) all the way to ethereal, flowing frocks. Some blew us away and others totally missed the mark. Take a look at our favourite fashion picks, for both guys and gals, as well as some of the looks we deemed total flops… because, you know, we like to keep things balanced in these parts.
1. Grimes
This monochromatic look should win all the awards… which is fitting seeing as Grimes took home one for Best EDM/Dance Video for her collab with Janelle Monae on “Venus Fly”. She was also nominated multiple times. But music aside, this is what happens when funky fashion is done right. We love that she paired this look with some retro shades, to keep her quirky personality shining through. She looks classic and chic but gives us major #girlboss vibes thanks to the commanding red hue. We are in love and she won the night in our style books hands down.
2. Martha Hunt
And this is why she’s called a supermodel. Martha Hunt gives us all the feels in this stunning 70s-inspired Ellery two-piece. Let me tell you, not many people can pull off the flare pant + off-the-shoulder tunic + exaggerated bell sleeve look… but this Victoria Secret vixen is a style icon to watch, and she definitely stole last night’s show sartorially speaking.
3. The Arkells
We’re in awe. The Arkells were on trend but stayed cool and casual in their elevated jeans-and-t-shirt looks. And kudos for managing to remain cohesive while also maintaining each member’s individual personalities. As the runways and bloggers have told us as of late, adding bright pop-art-style embroidery to anything imaginable is very in right now (thanks Gucci), so it was nice to see this popular detail have its moment in the spotlight last night.
4. Shay Mitchell
One word: GODDESS. This white jumpsuit is sheer perfection (pun intended). As Cal Weaver said in Crazy Stupid Love, “she’s the perfect combination of sexy and cute” – and that is no small feat to accomplish. Shay Mitchell exudes timelessness and beauty in this August Getty jumpsuit paired with a Flynn Skye bodysuit underneath. Can we put in a request to never let Shay leave Toronto again?
5. Dove Cameron
After a while you begin to notice that there are celebs who know how to dress for an occasion (i.e. they pay attention to what the occasion actually is) and those who don’t. Dove Cameron is one of the celebrities who does and boy did she nail her look last night on the pink MMVA carpet. The perfect dress for a petite blonde, this Vivetta piece adorned with flowers and pink lace was the perfect choice for her pixie goddess look; and we’ve officially decided we don’t want to see her dress any other way.
And now for the not-so-hot looks of the evening…
6. Carly Rae Jepson
We’re sorry to say Carly Rae Jepson looked more random than radiant last night in this (children’s?) pop-art-style patterned romper. Paired with Celine-looking heels, this look causes confusion on our end… and not to mention she was giving off some Tavi Gevinson vibes that definitely made us do a double take.
What are your thoughts? Let us know your fashion favourites from the 2017 MMVAs, we’d love to hear!
