Weather Woes: Dressing for the Days of In-Between Temperatures

Written by: Hannah Dobbie & Joanna Lupker

How many times have you spent your morning putting together the perfect outfit, only to go outside and realize that the weather you dressed for is not the weather you’re actually experiencing? We’ve all been there. When the seasons transition, choosing an outfit can be a chore. But it shouldn’t be! We’ve compiled a list of in-between dressing tips to keep you from making any wardrobe faux pas, so you will never again melt in the spontaneous sunshine or get frostbitten from an erratic snowstorm.

Layer it On

By building your outfit up over one key piece, you’ll not only get a model-off-duty look, but you’ll have the ability to remove the upper layers in an unexpected heat wave.

Layer it Under

The opposite of ‘Layering it On’, ‘Layering it Under’ means stacking those layers beneath your key piece. Better for the colder months, this allows you to pack in as much warmth as possible on those brrr-inducing days.

Wrap it Up

When in doubt, throw on a scarf. They add interest to an otherwise plain outfit, while keeping you nice and cozy. Scarves are easy to take off when it gets too warm, and they can also be used to cover your locks on a rain-induced bad hair day.

Brown Bag It

Similar to when your mother says, “better safe than sorry,” bring a tote large enough to stow away a few different outfit options. That way, you can have a cardigan and gloves tucked away, just in case.

Cuff Stuff

Too cold for shorts, but too hot for jeans? Cuff them! Turn your favourite pair of pants into capris with a cuff or two; this lets you cool down, while still being able to roll them back down in a sudden temperature drop. The same goes for a button-up shirt; cuff the sleeves to a three-quarter length, then unroll them when you get too chilly.

Sock it to ‘Em

Wear your shoes with a fun pair of socks. This will add personality to your outfit, while keeping your ankles from freezing. These statement socks will be the star of your look, especially with your newly cuffed jeans.

Up Your Do

Did a gust of wind blow away your perfect hairdo? Never get stuck in this situation again by doubling a hair scrunchie as a bracelet. This way you’re adding a cute accessory to your ensemble, and can tie your hair up before your ‘do is gone with the wind.

Tighten Up

You want to wear your beloved summer mini skirt, but are worried your legs will turn to ice within an hour? Slip on some tights or knee highs and you’ll give that mini (and your frozen legs) new life!

Top it Off

Once you’ve got your outfit all planned, throw on a light jacket. This extra layer will keep you looking cool in the cold, but it can also be taken off and slung over your shoulders or tied around your waist so you still look hot in the heat.
